  • Four to six ounces of meat, fish, poultry or dried beans
  • Three servings of vegetables; two servings of fruit
  • At least six servings of grain products

Guidelines for Reducing Dietary Fat

Reducing dietary fat is not about going on a diet; rather, it is about changing the way you eat. So, no need to cut out dietary fat all at once. Start by switching to milk instead of cream, then switching to low-fat mayonnaise on your sandwiches and so on.

If you enjoy certain low-fat foods, make them staples of your diet. List your favorite high-fat foods and find a way to substitute low-fat versions for some of them.

Buy a nutritional guide that lists the fat content of each food and use it to calculate how many grams of fat you consume each day.
