Asthma is a condition of the human respiratory system where the airways narrow down in response to an allergen, cold air, exercise, or emotional stress, causing symptoms such as wheezing, shortness of breath, chest tightness, and coughing.

Asthma is a treatable condition. Medical science has gained a better understanding of the cause of asthma and drugs are being developed to replace standard medications.

Signs and symptoms

Signs and symptoms of asthma can range from mild to severe. However, asthma attacks come after a warning and recognizing these warning signs and treating them early help prevent attacks.

Signs and symptoms for asthma may include:
  • Shortness of breath
  • Disturbed sleep caused by shortness of breath
  • Excessive coughing
  • Wheezing
  • Chest tightness
  • Chest pain
  • Need to use bronchodilators to open up airways by relaxing the surrounding muscles
Treatment and medication Asthma

Asthma is curable largely. Medications exist that may be used in combination to cure. There are four types of treatments, such as:

Long-term-control medications - used on a regular basis to control chronic symptoms and prevent attacks.

Quick-relief medications - these can be used as needed for rapid, short-term relief of symptoms in case of a sudden attack.

Immunotherapy - mmunotherapy decreases sensitivity of the body to a particular allergen.

Anti-IgE monoclonal antibodies - these drug products are designed to prevent the immune system from reacting to allergens.
